Italian 16th-century Rondel Dagger
Rondel daggers are quite rare on the market it is always plerasant to find one. Based on the shape of its blade, this one appears to date from after the 15th century. It is probbaly as lightly later model, which can reasonably be dated from the first hal fof the 16th century. The style of the hilt’s workmanship allows us to situate thids dagger from Northern Italy
The patina and the overall appearance of the weapon are entirely consistent and genuine, , and I have chosen to preserve this dagger in the condition as it was found, without cleaning it.
BLADE: after a 2 cm ricasso, it takes on a fairly slender rhombic cross-section that gradually tapers to form the point.Blade length =19.9 cm, width at the ricasso 1.7 cm, thickness at the ricasso 4.4 mm
THE RONDELS : They are complex : between two thin iron washers decorated on their edges with fine oblique fluting, there is a cylindrical copper section, also decorated with oblique fluting. The tang of the blade is riveted to the upper washer, splitting into two parts. This is a curiosity I’ve almost never encountered.
GRIP : It istwisted, made of deer antler.
In summary, this is abeautiful, well-crafted piece, just the kind we love to find.
