Hungarian Long Saber With The Both From Bajna Coat Of Arms
This very large sword is Hungarian. It can be dated to the late16th century or very early 17th century, datation based on the type of blade, style of mounting and the coat of arms. On the outer shell, on a copper plate is chiselledthe coat of arms of Erzebeth Bothj de Bajna, a member of the famous noble Both family. Erzebeth died in 1597, but there are examples of her coat of arms being used in 1603, so the coat of arms may have been preserved a few years after her death. In ancient heraldry, the use of coats of arms frequently does not exactly matches with the sometimes incomplete elements that history may have retained.
BLADE: This is a powerful, single-edged blade, with a thinning of the blade width in the middle third, then a return to the originalm width in the last third, with a sort of counter-edge. Two thin fullers on each face.
On the inner face, along the back edge, small star-shaped punch and near the shoulder, star and sickle from Styria. Inside the fullers, we find a decorative engraving a which is perhaps an inscription in an alphabet that I haven't mastered.
On the outer face , along the back is the same small star-shaped punch and an inscription inside the two fullersthat is very reminiscent of glagolitic script, which, if it is Glagolitic alphabet could read as follows"D SR SR SR SR SR".
Blade length = 83 cm, heel width 3.3 cm, heel thickness at shoulder 7mm
GUARD : Made of 2-piece riveted construction Large outer shell chased featuring a large flower in the center of which is set a copper disc engraved with the cited arms of the Both from Bajna "azure ( horizontal stripes = azure) asilver dextrochere issuing from a golden crown, pierced by an arrow and holding asilver sword point upwards surmounted by a star and a bright crescent moon".
The inner shell is smaller, with no particular decoration.
The quillons are inversely curved, ending in the shape of a flower, with stylized fish represented along their length.
POMMEL : it is massive and represents a face in profile which is perhaps the "face in the moon". This pommel is topped by a small button on which the tang of the blade is riveted.
GRIP : it is twisted, covered with a double wire binding twisted iron. The ferrules "turk's heads" are present and in good condition.
Beautiful weapon steeped in history, of a particularly uncommon model.
