Left-handed Dagger Known As The "dagger Of Mercy," Germany-italy, 16th Century
This dagger originates from Southern Germany or Northern Italy and can be dated to the 16th century. It can be classified as a "left-handed" dagger due to the guard ring and its overall geometry, but it can also be considered a "mercy dagger" because of its narrow, lozenge-shaped blade.
BLADE: It has a tapered, lozenge-shaped cross-section. The balance point is at thelevel of guard. Traces of sharpening and oxidation (are visible in the photo). Blade length = 26.8 cm, width near the guard= 1.8 cm, thickness bear the guard = 8.1 mm.
GUARD: It is a so-called "ring guard" with two straight quillons shaped like a baluster. The ring is small but very sturdy; it is by no means a decorative ring.
POMMEL : It has an elongated octagonal cross-section and terminates in a button to which the blade's tang is riveted.
GRIP : It is covered with a double layer of twisted copper wire in a chevron pattern, alternating with a thicker twisted copper wire. The braided crown ferrules, known as "Turk's heads," are made of iron wire; they are present and in good condition.
This is therefore an elegant dagger, interesting for its narrow blade, which allows it to be considered a "dagger of mercy" and which will fit perfectly into a collection of the Renaissance period.
