Yatagan Saber, Ottoman Or Greek
This sword is a yataghan. It could be either Ottoman or Greek, as its decoration corresponds to both possibilities. It can be dated to the second half of the 18th century, or at the latest, the first quarter of the 19th century.
BLADE: This is the characteristic yataghan blade, a single concave edge that widens towards the point. It has a wide hollow side, and the quality of the blade's manufacture is superior, as no forging defects are apparent. It is possible that this blade is made of Damascus steel, but only specialized metal treatment would allow for this determination.
The first 8 centimeters of the blade are partially covered with a dark metal (tin or tin and lead) with silver inlays. This silver inlay decoration is in better condition on the outer face than on the inner face, where some of the silver has disappeared.
Blade length = 64.5 cm, width at the ricasso = 3.4 cm, average thickness 6.3 mm at the spine.
HILT : It has the classic "two-eared" shape. The same dark gray metal is covered with silver leaf, in fairly good condition on the outside, but the silver is noticeably more worn on the inside (perhaps simply due to repeated rubbing of the weapon against the wide cotton belt into which it was carried).
This yataghan was clearly carried by its owner for a long time. It is definitely not a cheap tourist trinket.
Shipping costs: France €30, Europe €40. No shipping to the USA
