Antique Moroccan Koummya, Finely Carved. Circa 1900
The Koummya is the emblematic weapon of Morocco. This particular one, judging by its style, likely originates from the Fez region. It can be dated to the years 1900-1920. The entire mount, exceptionally fine in its chiseling, is made of silver (punch mark on the upper inside of the scabbard). It is clearly a Koummya of the so-called "jeweler's" type, and not a common piece from the souk.
The cord attachments are particularly well-chiseled, a sign of meticulous craftsmanship. The blade is a genuine blade, and the entire weapon is exceptionally well-fitted. It is therefore a piece of above-average quality.
BLADE : It is a genuine steel blade, sharpened. It has the classic double-edged design with offset cutting edges. On the inner side, near the hilt, there is a slightly worn etching depicting a horseman in an oval medallion.
Blade length = 21 cm, width near the handle 2.4 cm, thickness near the handle 4.4 mm.
HILT : All metal fittings are finely chased silver. The grip is made of blackened Atlas cedar.
SCABBARD : It is faceted and finely chased on each side. The attachment rings are finely crafted in the shape of flowers.
A braided black cord completes the weapon.
In short, this is a Koummya of a high quality, well above the mediocre quality of tourist souvenirs.
