Richly Chiseled Saladhelmet With Movable Visor,
This helmet is called a “salade with a movable visor.” The salade is a type of helmet characteristic of the 15th and 16th centuries. Unfortunately, this one does not date from that period, but rather from the 19th or early 20th century (?)
Its defining feature is the abundant decoration, a combinationof etching and chiseling, which depicts a profusion of strange figures: wolves, fishes , demons, birds, snakes…
The helmet skull is constructed in two parts plus the central comb, which are welded together. The welds are invisible from the outside of the helmet.
The visor is attached to the helmet skull by two bolts with handcrafted rectangular screws. It is held in the closed position by a small pin mounted on a steel blade.
The remarkable craftsmanship of this object is reminiscent of the helmets manufactured by Italians artesans in the late 19th century to meet the demand of British travelers eager for original antiques.
The steel of this helmet is thick, and its weight of 2.250 kg is significantly greater than that of fanciful thin-sheet-metal imitations. The photos speak for themselves, although it was not possible to capture every detail of the abundant decoration.
It is clear that a similar example of an engraved salade helmet dating from the 15th century would cost several tens thousands of euros, so let’s accept this helmet for what it is, at a reasonable price.
Shipping costs: France €50, Europe €70
