Large 17th-century Italian Stiletto, Known As "artillery" Stiletto
This dagger is an Italian stiletto dating from the 17th century. The hilt is typical of so-called “artillery” stilettos, but the blade is a civilian blade without the graduations characteristic of artillery stilettos.
BLADE: After a baluster-shaped start, it takes on a flattened rhombic cross-section all the way to the tip. It is significantly longer than most blades of this type of weapon.
Blade length = 27.8 cm, width at the shoulder= 1.7cm, thickness at the shoulder= 4.5 mm
GUARD: It is made of steel, diamond-shaped, terminating in ball-shaped quillons
POMMEL : It is made of brass, twisted to allow a theoretical use as a plug bayonet by wrapping acloth around it. The blade tang is directly riveted to this pommel.
GRIP : it is made of dark horn (or hardwood), twisted, and decorated with small brass nails and deer antler discs.
This stiletto is an interesting variation on artillery stylettos. It has a lovely patina from use.
