Heavy 15th-century War Halberd
This halberd is massive, of a model earlier than those usually seen. It dates from the second half of the 15th century and comes from an old Swiss collection, although its style is more Germanic than typically Swiss. Its main features are the width of the central point, reminiscent of Polish hunting halberds, and the considerable thickness of the iron. It is clearly a weapon of war, quite different from the elegant halberds of the 1600s-1650s carried by palace guards.
The wooden shaft has been sawn off, but in any case, it dated from the 19th century.
The iron part consists of a leaf-shaped central section with a strong central ridge on one face. At the base of this central section are two small lateral hooks, similar to those found on war spears.
Laterally, one side features a prominent crescent with two small hooks pointing towards the center, and on the opposite side, a hook adorned with two small, diverging hooks.
The weapon is completed by two short braces (one with a small missing piece) riveted to the fragment of the shaft.
This type of halberd, though rustic, is considerably rarer than the more elegant 17th-century models. The diameter of the socket, and therefore the diameter of the corresponding shaft (4 x 4 cm), indicates that this weapon must have been used by a very large (and strong) warrior with big hands.
