Hirschfänger Luxury Hunting Dagger With Engraved Blade And Gilded Bronze Mount
Artist: Johann Abraham Henckels
A luxurious, high-quality hunting dagger by Johann Abraham Henckels, who worked in Solingen between 1870 and 1900. This weapon, called a "Hirschfänger," is typical of Germanic culture. The entire mount is made of finely chiseled gilt bronze with hunting themes. The blades of the dagger and the companion knife are etched.
DAGGER BLADE : It is straight, single-edged, with a sort of unsharpened counter-edge on the last 12 cm and has a rich etching decoration on both sides:
External side: Plant motifs, cornucopia, two partridges raised by a dog fly away from a tree, a hare standing on its hind legs
Internal side: type of abundance trophy with sheaves of wheat, set of hunting objects with rifle, powder flask, hunting horn and deer head, surmounted by a seated squirrel eating an acorn under oak branches.
Blade length = 51 cm, width at the heel 3.2 cm, thickness at the heel = 7 mm
GUARD: it is a so-called "shell" guard in gilded bronze. The quillons depict dog heads, the central part of the cross shows on the external side a deer grazing and on the internal side a hunting dog. On the shell, we can see a stag and a doe lying down.
POMMEL: it represents a dog's head
GRIP : it is made of stag antler. Decorated with two rosette buttons in gilded brass
COMPANION KNIFE : Grip is stag antler, single-edged blade with a rich etched decoration in suite with the decoration of the blade of the main dagger
External face: fox's head in profile in a hunting horn accompanied by a hunting dagger, and plant motifs
Internal face = in a forest of deciduous and coniferous trees, two hunting dogs pursue a hare. It is on this face that we find the famous "twins" hallmark of Johann Abraham Henckels.
SCABBARD: it is made of wood covered with stitched leather, with scabbard entry and gilded brass chape engraved with plant motifs.
It is in summary a set of high quality, which should please any gentleman who loves hunting tradition
