Door Knocker From Cévennes Mountains Louis XIV
This door knocker comes from the Cévennes mountains , in their Lozère part. (the richest historical area)
It is complete, with both plates and the original nut that turns freely. It dates from the very end of the 17th century, or the very early the 18thcentury.
The shape calls for commentcomment: underneath the main ring is a pair of iron"moustaches" which evoke the moustaches worn by the Dragons du Roy... (king's dragoons 17th cent.) When you know the history of the Reformed religion in the Cévennes, and the history of the "Dragonnades", (military strong actions made by the dragoons against the people) you have to see a certain black humor from the part of the owner, who had a door knocke which, when pressed, seemed to say " Knock-knock, we the dragoons are here..."..."
It's a piece of popular art steeped in regional history.
