Genoa Italy 17th Cty Hunting Dagger& Its Original Scabbard, Engraved Blade
Artist: Ateliers Gènes Italie
HAUTE EPOQUE, CUTLERY COLLECTION
Important italien hunting dagger, richly engraved steel, and ebony (?) handle decorated with engraved iron plates
The knife has retained its original embossed leather scabbard, which only covers the blade up to its most richly engraved part, adjoining the guard: a lion standing on one side and a dragon appearing to surprise an eagle on the other side.
Condition:
Several traces of impact on the back of the blade showing that it was used as a "hammer" repeatedly by one of its users.
Also an original defect of the blade (bubble) that a talented cutler could restore.
Some losses on the ornamental engraved iron bands decorating the handle of the knife.
Also note the extreme quality of manufacture in a discreet detail: these decorative plates along the length of the pommel are fixed with very small hand-made screws rather than with points.
Dimensions:
43.5 cm length !!! * 4.5 cm height and maximum thickness of the blade (back) 5 mm
Superb hunting dagger having preserved in a very rare way its original leather scabbard and presenting an exceptional quality engraved blade, typical of the Genoese workshops in Italy (Please check a similar piece sold on my account a few months ago)
