Bronze Sword Belt Hook With Acorn, 17th Century
A beautifully designed sword suspension hook.
The knob at the top resembles an acorn; for this reason, it was considered a symbol of latent strength. The belt would have passed through the folded bronze loop and engaged an eyelet or hook attached to the scabbard. These appear in both Dutch and British contexts. They are generally quite well made and make a fine additionto sword collections focused on this period.
The finest collection of original sword belt fittings is found at the Rustkammer in Dresden. See Metropolitan Museum 2010.180.2, online anddisplayed in Gallery 307, for another example identified as French, 15th century (photo 8).Height: 8.5 cm
