Folk Art: 19th Cty Very Large Single-piece Wooden Bowl,
FOLK ART
Late 19th century
Very large monoxyl wooden bowl, carved—or rather, hollowed out—by hand
The bowl was hollowed out by hand from a large section of a tree trunk or a tree stump. Some of the cracks in the wood around the rim were rudimentarily patched with metal plates bent to fit this makeshift repair. In the center, one can see an irregular section that may have corresponded to a knot or the heartwood of the trunk, which is more difficult to work with.
Dimensions:
51 to 47 cm in diameter
and 20 to 17 cm in height
Condition:
Superb overall patina resulting from its creative process and centuries of daily use.
The carving stages performed by its maker are clearly visible and contribute to the exceptional aesthetic appeal of this bowl—intended to hold fruit, vegetables, or other items?
