14th Cty: Large Medieval Harness Pendant Featuring Two Lions Framing A "lombard M" Under A Tent
HAUTE EPOQUE
14th century
Important horse harness pendant depicting two powerful seated lions flanking a "Lombardic M." This stylized letter motif appears to be sheltered by a tent crowned with a fleur-de-lis
Quadrilobed shape with four points at the center of the quarter-circles, the copper pendant was originally intended to be enameled to highlight its motifs. In excellent condition; the finely chiseled motifs are perfectly preserved and clearly visible. It has a beautiful brown patina with some traces of green oxidation
Large size, with a diameter of 5.3 cm (approximately 6 cm including its loop, which is also in perfect condition)
Documentation:
*Please check details of the painting “Procession of the Magi” by Benezzo GOZZOLI (circa 1459/1460) - Photos 4
*For a specimen of similar size (5.9 cm x 5.7 cm), composition, and subject matter, Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, attributed to a 14th-century Spanish workshop, Department of Arms and Armor, Inv. No. 04.3.394, see last photos
"Heraldry, or coat of arms, was extremely important in Europe throughout the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. Heraldic emblems were used to identify noble families, towns, regions, and even countries. In addition to being displayed on shields and flags, heraldry was incorporated into architectural decoration both inside and outside buildings, on furniture, artworks, clothing, and horse equipment. Harness pendants, like this example, would have been attached to a bridle, bit, or other straps forming the harness of a horse ridden by a noble or a member of their entourage. Many harness pendants are also purely decorative, or feature symbols that aren't specifically heraldic."
* Four-lobed pendant or gilded bronze harness pendant, depicting a woman enthroned between two lions, Spain or France, circa 1300/1400, Louvre Museum, Department of Medieval Art Objects,... from the Renaissance and modern times, inventory no. OA 3026 (height 6.6 × 5.7 cm) Please check the last 2 photos
Here, too, the woman is seated beneath a niche framing the main subject, in this case featuring Gothic architecture.
