"The motif of the Bastille's storming belongs to the family of decorations inspired by prints. Parisian engravers widely disseminated the image of the revolutionary day of July 14, 1789, at the time of the governor's arrestation, an image taken up in the medal in early 1790 before serving as a model for costume button makers. The sepia aquatint published by Basset in rue St Jacques (Vinck collection 1593), reproduced in polychrome and opiated by Letourmy in Orleans on wood (Oberlé Nevers collection, 1989, cat E54), served as a model for Nivernais earthenware makers.
The image simplified by the ceramic makers appears only on plates or salad bowls, and is treated in a rectanguar cartouche with cut corners; Various ones only concern all to the figures in the foreground..."
