FRENCH FAÏENCE
French Revolution era
Plate depicting in profile the famous French ship, the Frigate "Le Vengeur", illustrating an episode of a famous battle between France and England in 1794.
Our model shows the boat in profile flying a red, white, and blue flag with a black cross. Some examples in Nevers faïence bear the initials RF for "République Française," and/or others a star in the sky. (please check last photo)
The "three-masted" ship is depicted in a schematic and funny way by the layering of three sails, while its cannon(s) are still smoking from a recent and heroic battle !

History:
"Le ‘Vengeur du Peuple’ or ‘Marseillois’ was a French warship in service from 1766 to 1794.
A third-rate ship of the line, it carried 74 guns on two decks. It was launched during the period of patriotic resurgence following the defeats in the Seven Years' War. It participated in the American War of Independence, but it is best known for its loss at the Battle of Prairial in 1794, under circumstances glorified by revolutionary propaganda."
