Northern European Rapier, Circa 1620
Artist: Solingen
This rapier originates from Northern Europe, and can be dated1620-1630 based on the style of the mount. The blade is made in Solingen. The guard has two symmetrical shells, pierced by numerous star-shaped holes known as "point breakers"
BLADE : After a ricasso, most of which lies between the guard shells and quillons, it takes on a 6-sided cross-section, a little worn and gradually becomes diamond-shaped. On each side, curious central fuller on th efirst 14 cm, which could be described as "dotted". In these hollows, we find on each face the inscription : IN SO LIN GEN and the small double-cross mark typical of Solingen blades. The blade is in very good condition.
Blade length from cross guard to tip = 84.5 cm, length from outer edge of shells to tip = 80 cm Width at ricasso =2 cm, thickness at ricasso = 9.5 mm Balance point 4 cm from outer edge of shells.
GUARD : made of a thick double shell pierced by a multitude of star-shaped or circular holes. These holes are called "point breakers"and are designed to block the tip of an opposing blade. Insome places, the shells show small slits which are battle marks. These marks are steeped in history, bearing witness of this weapon.
The guard is completed with straight quillons ending in small balls. Two finger rings called "donkey steps" join the shells and are attached by screws. The knuckle bow is decorated in the same way as the quillons. It ends close to the pommel.
POMMEL: a beautifully crafted pommel in the shape of a "pumpkin" with 8 segments. It is topped by a small knob to which the blade tang is riveted.
GRIP : it is covered with a complex wire binding of fine quality, alternating herringbone braided wire binding and bigger section twisted binding . The braided crown ferrules known as "Turk's heads" are present and in good condition
This weapon is in very good condition, and is of above average quality. The relatively short blade corresponds to a fashion during the end of the first quarter of the 17th century, in reaction to theblades with excessive lenght ofrom the late 16th century, which, while suitable for dueling, were very impractical for wearing in town dress.
