Dhal, Shield India, Erotic Motifs, Curiosa
This circular shield is called a Dhal in India. The Western term is "rondache" (round shield) It is entirely made of steel, the decorations are not acid-etched, but are chiseled into the mass of the metal with a chisel, which requires much more work.
I will not describe the motifs, which are made up of gallant scenes as can be seen in the photos. Indian tradition does not have exactly the same relationship to the body as that which is common in Western civilization... In the center we find a noble lady and her two lovers, which is not shocking since for example in the Maha Baratta, the five Pandava brothers all married Draupadi... And in Ladakh, polyandry is still common.
All around are depicted couples in different postures of pleasure.
We find the four iron bosses, which correspond internally to the attachment rings.
The object is in very good condition, and could please as much a collector interested in the traditions of India, as an amateur of eroticism.
Shipping costs France 30€, Europe 40€
