Turkmen Chuval Yomud. Circa 1900. 102 X 72 Cm

A superb Yomut chuval panel, a remarkable example of the textile art of the Turkmen nomadic peoples.

These large storage pouches were once an integral part of the yurt’s furnishings and accompanied families on their travels. Here, the utilitarian function of the object is almost overshadowed by the extraordinary decorative richness of the weave.
Traditionally woven and knotted using wool-on-wool technique, the piece is organized around nine large güls arranged in three rows of three. These powerful geometric emblems are accompanied by small, cruciform secondary güls that punctuate the field and give the composition its rhythm.
A succession of narrow borders, followed by more elaborately decorated ones, frames the central field. The lower section, or elem, is particularly spectacular: divided vertically, it features a series of large, serrated chevrons whose surprisingly modern design contrasts with the rigor of the main field.
The palette of plant-based dyes is magnificent. Against a brown-red background, madder red and wine-red stand out against several shades of indigo blue—ranging from deep blue to petrol blue—paired with brick reds and corals, nearly black browns, and a beautiful natural ivory.
The quality of the dyes and the wool gives these colors remarkable depth. Certain shades seem almost imprisoned within the fiber, while the indigos and ivories bring light and dimension to the design.
An antique piece of great decorative power, in which the rigor of the Yomut tribal style meets a surprising graphic freedom.
