When Pakistan seceded from India, many carpet weavers migrated to Pakistan. Most of them found work in Lahore and Karachi at a time when carpet production was receiving government support in the form of imported, high-quality yarn.
Today, Pakistani carpets are made with Australian wool, giving them a very similar appearance to silk carpets. Their high knot density provides these carpets with great durability at a lower price than their Persian counterparts.
The silky wool used is very soft, lustrous, and gives the carpets a lightness that makes them suitable for hanging on walls.
The details are so extraordinarily fine and intricate, so shimmering in the daylight, that they appear almost alive. Among the typical designs of these rugs are garden motifs featuring willows, cypresses, and magnificent trees of life, as well as intricately decorated central medallions. The craftsmanship of these rugs is remarkable.
