17th-century Biblical Painting - Italy & The Bologna School - The Virgin With The Bible And The Sleeping Child Jesus

Artist: école Bolonaise
A beautiful 17th-century biblical painting depicting the Virgin Mary holding a Bible, gazing at the sleeping infant Jesus ... The work is unsigned, but its “Baroque-Classical” style is quite characteristic of the Bolognese school, whose painters Guido Reni (1575–1642) and Simone Cantarini (1612–1648) were among the leading figures: they often depicted Madonna themes with expressions that blend gentleness, kindness, and grace, very much in the spirit of the painting presented here... Note: It is worth noting that, aside from the Bolognese school, 17th-century French painters were strongly influenced by Italian art and contributed significantlyto popularizing this type of iconography: notable examples include Jacques Stella (1596–1657) Pierre Mignard (1612–1695), Laurent de La Hyre (1606–1656), and Sébastien Bourdon (1616–1671), to name only the most famous here...
