Set Of Four Carved Chairs, Dutch Baroque/william And Mary Period, Circa 1700–1725
A set of four identical, richly carved chairs dating from the early 18th century, during the Dutch Baroque period (circa 1700–1725). These chairs are also known as “high-back” chairs because of their elongated vertical backs. The design of the chairs underwent a radical evolution between 1690 and 1700, notably under the influence of the work of the French architect, interior designer, and engraver Daniel Marot (1661–1752). Marot created various models of chairs and armchairs, notably for his *Second Livre d’Appartement*, plate 6, published in 1703. Made entirely of solid walnut, these chairs are primarily assembled using pinned mortise and tenon joints. Close-ups clearly reveal these joints, as well as the marks left by saws, planes, chisels, and gouges. The chairs are richly and delicately decorated with turned motifs and symmetrical carvings depicting curled acanthus leaves, flowers, seashells, and lambrequins. The vertical backrest and the ornament on the front crossbar, between the baluster-shaped front legs, are openwork. Two crossbars and the ornament on the front crossbar of one of the chairs have been skillfully restored. Traces of a past woodworm infestation are visible on the chairs. The infestation is now inactive and has caused no significant damage to the structure.
The chairs were recently reupholstered with the current dark blue velvet, which perfectly matches the original style, and adorned with tassels. Over the course of more than 300 years, the chairs have acquired a magnificent warm orange-brown hue, a patina, and a silky luster.
