Mahogany Side Table, Dutch Louis XVI Period, Circa 1780–1800.

An 18th-century side table with a swiveling top, suitable for use as a writing desk, card table, or dining table. Made during the Dutch Louis XVI period circa 1780-1800.

The table is primarily made of high-quality solid mahogany. Only the sides, the bottom, and the drawer runners are made of Oak. The flaps of the swivel top are perfectly straight and flat, just as they were originally, and retain their original hinges. The single drawer is secured at the front with hand-forged nails and joined with a dovetail joint at the back. It features its original lock (the key is missing) and gilded brass hardware adorned with beaded borders and leaf motifs, as well as floral rosettes. The front left leg is fitted with an original brass safety latch inlaid with, which prevents the tabletop from rotating. The lower flap has slits on the sides and a wrought-iron eyelet. It is unclear exactly what these extensions are used for, but it is presumed that they allow for the addition of an extension piece to enlarge the tabletop when guests stay for dinner. The table rests on tapered, fluted square legs and a slightly wider, contoured base. The table as a whole features magnificent, contrasting warm and deep colors, a lovely satin luster thanks to its authentic wax finish, and a superb patina acquired over the centuries!
