Amboyna Wood Decanter Box, Empire Period, France, Circa 1810–1820
An early 19th C. decanter box made during the French Empire period, circa 1810–1820.Given the quality of its craftsmanship and the (exclusive) materials used, this is most likely a campaign-style liquor cabinet, custom-made for a wealthy officer who took it with him on his military campaigns. The cabinet is constructed of light-colored wood (softwood) and veneered with a precious exotic amboyna (root) veneer, characterized by an exceptionally fine grain and a magnificent warm color. The brass brackets serve both as protection and as ornamentation. The lock and the small ornate handle on the lid echo the typical shape of a coat of arms. Superb brass handles are inlaid on either side of the cabinet. The cabinet retains its original brass hinges. The eyelet and the lock, complete with its functional key, have been skillfully replaced with original parts. Inside, there are four mouth-blown decanters, decorated with fine gilding featuring floral and plant motifs, among others. Due to wear and tear, this gilding is more or less visible on some of the carafes. One of the carafes has two small chips on the rim. They also bear their silver-colored, engraved labels listing the liqueurs: Bénédictine, Drambuie, Grand Marnier, and Vieille Cure. The interior is lined with red paper and leather, adorned with gold piping and stylized floral and plant motifs. Given the fragility of these materials, they show the usual imperfections and signs of wear. The edges are veneered with blackened wood. This elegant liqueur cabinet, with its beautiful deep, warm orange color and subtle sheen, is a feast for the eyes and a pleasure to use for many years to come!
