5-piece Walnut Dining Room Set, By Gebr. Horrix, The Hague, Circa 1860–1880.

A five-piece walnut dining room set, entirely original, dating from the 19th century and manufactured during the reign of William III in the Netherlands, between approximately 1860 and 1880.This set was produced at the “Anna Paulowna” furniture factory owned by the Horrix brothers. This factory was the very first to use steam-powered machinery in the furniture industry, in 1851.Matthijs Horrix (1735–1809), originally from Germany, was registered with the Hague Furniture Makers’ Guild in 1764 and opened a workshop on Spuistraat that same year.He was the founder of the largest family of furniture makers and royal suppliers in the Netherlands, which ceased operations in 1890, leaving behind a rich legacy spanning 126 years in the history of furniture!This set is crafted in the manufacturer’s “rustic” style, in which walnut has been carved and sculpted to mimic the branches and bark of a tree. The tabletop and base of the dining table are made of light-colored softwood and feature a thin veneer of solid walnut. This choice, driven by cost-saving considerations, made it possible to produce as many pieces of walnut furniture as possible, since walnut is comparatively more expensive than lighter softwoods. The tabletop is covered in reddish-brown leather (chestnut color), and the table rests on elegantly designed legs.The seat crossbars of the chairs are made of beech, veneered with walnut, and the front crossbar consists of a thin layer of solid walnut. The front legs and the backrest (rear legs, seat, and lumbar support) are made entirely of solid walnut. The chairs are upholstered in the same reddish-brown (chestnut-colored) leather as the tabletop. The upholstery is trimmed with leather piping in the same color and secured with decorative copper nails.The reddish-brown (chestnut-colored) leather and the base of the upholstery are original. They show some signs of wear and/or stains, and the upholstery on some chairs is slightly more worn or sagging; nevertheless, the set is in very good condition considering its age!The woodwork has a beautiful, warm, deep color and has developed a lovely patina and a silky sheen over the years.A stamp has been affixed under the table and on the crossbar of each chair; some are more legible than others.A unique, entirely original set in good condition that will be the center of attention in any home!Table dimensions:Height: 74.5 cmWidth: 101 cmDepth: 80.5 cmHeight from floor to bottom of crossbars: 62.5 cmSeat height of chairs: 46 cm
