A Painted Corner Cabinet With Provenance, Dutch Louis XVI Period, Circa 1790–1810

An authentic Dutch corner cabinet dating from the Louis XVI period (circa 1790–1810).

This piece is made of solid Pine, has been repainted several times, and currently features a color palette of creamy white and light green (aqua green). Close-up photos allow you to appreciate the various joints and construction techniques. An elegant, classically carved vase, adorned with stylized palmettes and fluting, sits on the top, framed on either side by a laurel garland.
A dental molding runs beneath the profiled upper molding. The two doors, which open on their original hinges, are constructed using a pinned mortise-and-tenon joint. Beveled panels with inset corners are inserted into the rebates of the profiled frame. To accentuate the beveled effect, the panels feature contrasting lines and carved floral rosettes in the inset corners. The left door is fitted with a rotary knob adorned with a carved floral rosette and a functional lock with working key, secured with hand-forged nails. The right door is fitted with a sliding latch at the bottom. Behind the doors are four shelves, two of which were added later. The doors are framed by double-fluted stiles. The piece rests on an elegant base and tapered legs. The piece displays magnificent color contrasts and shows normal signs of use and wear on its polychrome surface.

PROVENANCE: This piece comes from the rectory of the former Roman Catholic Church of Saints Peter and Paul in Maassluis. This religious building is part of the Parish of Saints Peter and Paul in Maassluis. The church, built in the Neoclassical style and nicknamed “the barn church,” dates from 1787, and the parish was established in 1790. On the night of June 15–16, Father Fransen was alerted by a strong burning smell.  The source of the fire was located inside the church, and the investigation quickly revealed that it was arson. Balls of burning wood wool had been thrown inside through an open window on the northeast facade, setting the wooden staircase leading to the choir on fire. Despite a rapid response, the interior and the organ sustained significant damage from both fire and water. Reconstruction began gradually, often through ingenuity. On March 22, 1963, Father Vester was installed in the parish, succeeding Father Fransen. He accelerated the reconstruction and expansion of the church, and to finance this work, some of the furnishings were sold, including this piece of furniture. As the Catholic community in Maassluis was growing rapidly, it was decided in 1965 to split the parish and build new churches. The church fell into disrepair, but after a complete restoration, it was converted into a theater in 1984 and is now designated a national historic monument.
