A Pair Of Elegant, Identical Boxes, Dutch Transitional Period, 1770–1780

A pair of identical boxes, of an very elegant design, made in The Netherlands during the late Louis XV-/Transitional period, 1770–1780.
These boxes were intended for storing luxury items: tobacco (one featuring a removable inner lid made of solid mahogany with a brass knob) and tea (the other divided into compartments). The box with dividers originally contained removable metal containers with brass lids, which were likely removed due to corrosion, a common occurrence. Since tea and tobacco boxes were often made individually, this authentic pair and especially being 18th C. examples can be called rare! The boxes are made of solid Oak and Mahogany, veneered with Brazilian Tulipwood, and feature edges in rosewood and/or padauk. The handles and escutcheons are original and decorated with S- and C-shaped scrolls, rocaille and floral motifs, pearl beads, etc. A close-up clearly reveals the round nut with a slot for a special screwdriver. In addition, the authentic (hand) saw marks on the oak lid are visible! The brass hinges, locks, and locking eyelets on both boxes have once been replaced. The boxes boast a magnificent deep, warm orange color and a superb satin finish.

The shipment of objects can be arranged and will be packed with care. Shipment prices vary per country and are there for on request to make sure you will get the best price!
