Roman Bronze Phallic Statuette – 1st–3rd Century A.d. – Archaeology
This remarkable bronze phallic figurine, dating from the 1st to the 3rd century AD, is a particularly rare example of the religious culture and beliefs of ancient Rome.
Phallic amulets were extremely widespread throughout the Roman Empire. Generally small in size and fitted with a suspension ring, they were worn as protective jewelry to ward off the evil eye (fascinum) and to promote fertility, prosperity, and good fortune.
The specimen presented here stands out for its truly exceptional nature. Measuring 4.6 cm in height and weighing 91 grams, its dimensions far exceed those of amulets typically encountered. The absence of a suspension mechanism and its substantial weight suggest it is more likely a votive statuette or an ex-voto intended to be placed on a household altar or in a sanctuary, rather than a simple protective pendant.
The figurine was crafted using the traditional lost-wax technique and features a beautiful, dark, antique patina that is perfectly uniform, underscoring its authenticity and age.
This piece comes from a former Dutch collection. It is believed to have been discovered in Den Hout (municipality of Oosterhout, North Brabant, Netherlands), not far from Nijmegen, an important city and military center on the Roman Rhine frontier.
With its unusual size, excellent condition, ancient provenance, and archaeological significance, this statuette is a fine collector’s item, rare on the Roman antiquities market.
