Medieval Bronze Wall Sconce Depicting A Burgher Wearing A Houppelande – Early 15th Century

Medieval bronze wall sconce depicting a bourgeois in a houppelande – Early 15th century

Rare medieval bronze wall sconce depicting a full-length male figure, dating from the early 15th century.

The figure is depicted wearing an elegant houppelande with ample folds and a rich cap worn “en coq,” a hairstyle emblematic of bourgeois and aristocratic fashion in the early decades of the 15th century. This secular depiction is uncommon in archaeological artifacts and evokes figures more typically found in illuminations from this period.

The appliqué has a hole at its base, indicating that it was once attached to a support that has since disappeared—likely a casket, a piece of furniture, or another item of prestigious furnishings.

The quality of the modeling, the rendering of the costume, and the iconographic significance of this figure make it a fine collector’s item, illustrating the spread of civilian fashion trends in the late Middle Ages.

Height: 7.3 cm.

In excellent condition, with an antique patina and slight signs of wear consistent with its age.
