This is anoil painting on canvas depicting a full-length female figure dressedin a flamenco outfit; she is holding a fan and stands out against anopen landscape. The work is set in a richly ornamented gilded frame, probably from the 19th century or inspired by the historicist styles of thatera. A plaque at the bottom of the frame identifies the artist asEugenio Lucas (1824–1870).Iconographically,the painting is fully in line with the Spanish genre of*costumbrismo*, which enjoyed immense popularity during the Romantic era. Thefigure of the Andalusian woman—whether a dancer or a *maja*—was a favorite subject for both the domestic market andforeign travelers seeking scenes considered representative of Spain. Thefigure stands alone, the true protagonist of the composition, whilethe landscape serves merely as a backdrop.
Her dark red dress—embellished withgolden details—as well as her black shawl, fan, and the flower in herhair reflect an iconography that is immediately recognizable inthe Spanish Romantic imagination. The executionexhibits interesting characteristics.
The background is rendered with arelatively loose and atmospheric touch, devoid of precise details, whereasthe figure is rendered with much greater precision. This contrastbetween the landscape and the subject is common among many Spanish paintersof the mid-19th century. The color palette favors reds, earthy tones, and blacks—colors often found in the workof Eugenio Lucas Velázquez. Furthermore, the soft light and the absence ofsharp contrasts help create a scene suited to the bourgeois tastesof the time. The frame showssigns of wear and slight loss of gilding, which is common forpieces of this age (see photos).A particularly notable detail is the inscription “Flamenca” appearing at the bottom. This type of label wascommon at exhibitions, in private collections, and amongart dealers during the 19th and early 20th centuries.
