It is generally identified by theblessing gesture of the right hand, while the left hand holds a globe or asphere, symbolizing his role as universal savior.The sculpture in question is a devotional imagedepicting the Infant Jesus under the title of Salvator Mundi. It isa solitary, full-length, nude figure, designed for private contemplation anddomestic piety. Of particular note are the delicate carving ofhis curly hair, his expressive polychrome eyes, and the gilded globe heholds in his left hand.The gesture of blessing is particularly interesting,as the right arm rises toward the left side of the body rather than being directedfrontally toward the viewer, as is usually the case in thisiconography. This detail lends a unique character to the composition andenhances the figure’s dynamism.From a formal perspective, the Child displays arobust and carefully studied anatomy.
