Saint Ubaldesca Or Waldesca, Polychrome And Gilded Wooden Sculpture, Spanish School, 17th Century

Saint Waldesca Taccini, or Ubaldesca,was born in 1136 in Pisa, Tuscany. From a very young age, she entered theconvent of the Order of St. John of Jerusalem in Pisa. She lived there until herdeath in 1206. Deeply devout, she devoted herself to the poor and the sick,performing numerous miracles.
A sculpture in the round, witheyes made of glass paste. On her chest she wears the white cross of the Orderof St. John of Jerusalem, to which she belonged, as well as the Golden Fleece.She holds in her hands the attributes with which she is mostoften depicted—the ear of wheat and the copper cauldron—in reference to her mosticonic miracle:
- On Good Friday, a woman exhausted from work asked the saintfor water so she would not faint, begging her to bless it first. Upontasting it, she realized it had turned into wine.
In Spain, she is veneratedparticularly at the Royal Monastery of Santa María de Sijena or Sigena, in theprovince of Huesca, not only because of the devotion of the Order ofSt. John of Jerusalem within the monastery, but also because in the 17th century,a relic of the nun (a rib) was received there and preserved in thechapel dedicated to the saint.
