Greek Campanian drinking cup - 4th-3rd century BC. - Provenance, archaeology
Superb Campanian ceramic drinking cup, dated to the Hellenistic period (4th-3rd century BC), from the workshops of Magna Graecia.
This piece stands out for the quality of its deep, glossy black glaze, with delicate metallescent reflections, characteristic of southern Italian production. The paste, visible in reserve on the inside, reveals an orange hue typical of these ancient ceramics.
With two elegant handles, this bowl is part of the tradition of the symposion, an essential moment in Greek social life dedicated to wine, exchange and conviviality.
The example presented comes from the workshop of sculptor Siméon Foucault (1884-1923), winner of the Prix de Rome in 1912. A resident at Villa Medici between 1913 and 1914, it is likely that this work was brought back from Italy on this occasion, giving this piece a particularly interesting artistic provenance. An ink inscription is visible below the base, but difficult to decipher and interpret: "Jousse = VIII".
Very good overall condition. Note some slight glaze bleeding. Nice patina, glaze well preserved and still shiny.
