Hellenistic Terracotta Figurine - Greek Theater Mask, 3rd-2nd Century Archaeology

Hellenistic terracotta figurine - Greek theater mask, 3rd-2nd century archaeology

Charming and rare Greek terracotta figurine from the Hellenistic period, dated 3rd-2nd century BC, representing an ancient theater mask, known as Persona.

This unusual piece stands out for its small dimensions (2.9 x 3 cm) as well as its subject. The mask, treated in the round, has characteristic expressive features: eyes highlighted by raised eyebrows and a wide-open mouth, evoking comedy masks in ancient Greek theater. The entire piece is fully sculpted, including the hair that envelops the entire piece.

This is a complete figurine and not a fragment or head from a larger set, which enhances its interest and rarity. The paste is yellow. The state of preservation is excellent, despite the presence of slight concretions and ferrous corrosion, testifying to an object from ancient excavations.

These small figurines were traditionally intended for votive offerings in shrines or deposited in funerary contexts, possibly related to the world of theater (actor's grave?).

This example also benefits from a particularly interesting provenance: it comes from the workshop of sculptor Siméon Foucault, winner of the Prix de Rome in 1912. A resident at the Villa Médicis between 1913 and 1914, it is likely that this work was brought back from Italy on this occasion before joining his workshop.

Rare and very uncommon item on the art market.
