Large English Sideboard, Buffet, Dresser, Solid Oak, George III Period, 19th Century
Large Sideboard, Credenza, Hutch, 19th-Century George III Solid Oak English Welsh Dresser
Two-part hutch/sideboard known as a "Welsh dresser." The two sections can be easily separated to use the base independently as a sideboard.
English craftsmanship, George III period, early 19th century.
Entire structure in solid oak. Nuanced dark patina. Brass and wrought iron hardware
Forms an independent sideboard. Overhanging rectangular top with straight edges. The frieze contains three adjacent drawers of identical dimensions. Hand-cut dovetailed drawer construction. Drawer fronts adorned with brass swan-neck drop handles on shaped backplates. Cut-out brass central keyhole escutcheon. A replacement iron lock is present at the bottom of the central drawer. Keys are missing. Richly scalloped lower apron with an arcade motif. Straight, square-section leg.
Removable upper section forming a plate rack. The base simply slots into a groove carved into the lower top. Projecting ogee-molded cornice. Scalloped frieze beneath the cornice, mirroring the design of the lower apron. Three tiered shelves equipped with retaining strips (plate stops). Open back.
Traditional pegged and nailed construction. The back of the piece and the drawer bottoms are made of large, rough split and nailed boards. The back retains a printed paper label reading "Newman & Sons (Hythe) Ltd A 37909", an old mark from a British carrier or furniture storage company.
Wear consistent with age and use. Traces of customary restorations. Shrinkage cracks on the panels, wear on the corners, watermarks, and scratches on the lower top. Pronounced wood loss at the base of the rear stiles (uprights). The piece maintains good structural stability.
