Jules CROSNIER (1843-1917)Watercolor on paper
signed and dated lower right: August 1887

Visible dimensions (sight size): 27×37 cm.
Frame measurements: 43×53 cm.

A seascape with rocks in the foreground, a calm expanse of water, and a distant horizon line beneath a cloudy sky. The composition and colors evoke a peaceful and realistic atmosphere, characteristic of Jules Crosnier's work. Although Crosnier is more rooted in realism and the academic tradition, some of his works may share luminous or atmospheric concerns with the Post-Impressionists, without adopting their brushstroke techniques. Art from the late 19th - early 20th century. He is exhibited at the Musée d'art et d'histoire in Geneva.

Jules Crosnier (1843-1917), born in Nancy, studied in Paris, then, eager to learn enamel painting, came to Geneva. He took classes with Barthélémy Menn and stayed there for the rest of his life, acquiring Genevan nationality. He was the substitute for Auguste Baud-Bovy before being appointed professor himself at the Geneva School of Fine Arts (École des Beaux-Arts) in 1876, where he taught until his death. He was a talented watercolorist and painter and undertook many artistic campaigns in Brittany, Scotland, and on the shores of Lake Geneva, which he particularly loved.Jules Crosnier had a positive influence on the artistic movement in Geneva through regular exhibitions at the Fine Arts and the Société des Arts, by creating the permanent exhibition of the Athénée, and by directing the art review: "Nos anciens et leurs oeuvres" (Our Elders and Their Works). He died in Geneva in 1917.
