Artist: William Smith

18th-Century Reproduction, English School — Oval Giltwood Frame, William Smith, London

Oval moulded giltwood frame. The profile is decorated with a ribboned reed (torus) moulding. Original gilding with typical wear, revealing the red bole beneath. The reverse bears the period trade label of the London firm William Smith:

“SMITH – Portrait-Painter in Oil, – Printseller & Picture Frame Maker, N. 40, Oxford Street”.

William Smith is listed as a printseller and frame maker active at this address in the last quarter of the 18th century (circa 1780–1800). His trade card is referenced on the British Museum website.

Contains an early varnished reproduction (a print laid down/mounted on panel or card), using a technique imitating oil painting, with an overall age-related craquelure network. English School subject depicting a lady of rank, probably a Duchess or aristocratic figure. Shown in three-quarter bust, wearing a yellow dress with a black belt, a bodice adorned with a flower, and a wide-brimmed hat with feathers and ribbons characteristic of 1780s fashion.

Period: Late 18th century (George III period).
