Object description :

"Painting, André Charles Lambert (1892-1985) - Mountain Landscape, Swiss Alps, Watercolor"

Painting, André Charles Lambert – Mountain Landscape, Swiss Alps, Watercolor Dated 1981.
Watercolor and pencil on paper.

An animated view of a mountain landscape, very probably located in the Swiss Alps. The composition opens onto a foreground of verdant pastures and trees rendered with quick touches, suggesting rural architecture. The background is structured by a bluish ridgeline, topped by a broad sky with heavy clouds, treated in gray and blue washes.

Signed at the lower right “André C. Lambert” and dated “81” (for 1981).

Loose sheet (not mounted), in very good condition overall: a few pinholes along the margins, slight waviness of the paper, and handling marks.

Dimensions:

• Height: 37 cm
• Width: 55 cm

André-Charles Lambert:
master jeweler, watercolorist, engraver, enamel painter, and medallist. Geneva, 07/04/1892 – Geneva, 10/13/1985. After an apprenticeship as a jeweler at the School of Industrial Arts from 1906 to 1910, André Lambert worked as a craftsman for Pochelon and Ruchonnet, jewelers in La Fusterie. Then, after the First World War, he became workshop foreman at Gallopin, where he remained for twenty-four years. From 1943 to 1957, he taught jewelry-making at the School of Decorative Arts. Seeking to democratize jewelry, he incorporated non-precious materials into his creations. His original approach to jewelry—particularly his use of insects as motifs—had a major influence on his disciple Gilbert Albert. He also practiced painting, and especially watercolor, whose style he reproduced in his enamel painting. In this medium, he particularly valued the creation of landscapes.

1925: Gold medal, International Exhibition of Decorative Arts, Paris.
1877–1943: workshop foreman at the House of Gallopin, jewelry and fine jewelry, Geneva.
1943–1957: professor of the jewelry class at the School of Industrial Arts, Geneva.
1957–1983: active once again at Gallopin.
