Large Antique Carved Cedar Pillar Column with Scroll Capital – Pakistan/India – Late 19th Century Architecture

A substantial wooden support column, serving as a true pillar from a traditional home, surmounted by its wide volute (scroll) capital beam. This type of architectural element was originally used to support the floor or gallery of a house or temple, designed to represent a stylized tree rising from the base to the upper branches.

Richly carved on all sides with scrollwork (rinceaux), foliage, and stylized floral motifs. The relief features beautiful depth.
The wide-spanning capital is adorned with a carved frieze on the front and sides, while the back remains smooth, having originally been abutted against the house structure.
The upper section is supported by a series of scrolling volutes, giving the piece a highly sculptural silhouette.
The wood, likely cedar (Deodar), displays a beautiful antique honey-to-golden patina, highlighted by visible tool marks.

Very good overall condition for an architectural element of this size and era.
Ancient, open structural cracks run through the column and capital; these should be considered inherent to the material and the age of the piece.
This column is equally suitable for architectural repurposing (supporting a mezzanine, framing a passageway, interior facade) or for purely decorative presentation, fixed against a wall as a large wooden sculpture.

Origin: Likely Pakistani craftsmanship, Swat Valley / Kohistan region, late 19th – early 20th century.
Provenance: Comes from a famous "Palace" hotel in the French Alps.
