Large English Sideboard, Solid Oak Buffet, George I Or George II Period, 18th Century

Large English sideboard / dresser / buffet in solid oak, George I or George II period, first half of the 18th century.

An elongated rectangular sideboard in solid oak. Rustic English work from the first half of the 18th century, attributable to the George I or George II periods.

The front opens with three central stacked drawers, flanked by two side compartments, each fitted with a frieze drawer above a cupboard door. Molded intermediate rails. The base is rhythmically defined by a lower apron that is deeply cut and strongly shaped with bracketed curves. The piece stands on a straight, square-section base formed by the continuation of the uprights (6 legs).

Heavy and substantial construction with thick sections. Traditional pegged joinery, visible on the structure. The back and drawer bottoms are made of thick, roughly sawn boards, with primitive nailed construction characteristic of the period. The top may possibly have been replaced over time with an oak element of consistent color and texture.

Highly decorative period hardware. The drawer handles and keyhole escutcheons are in cast and cut brass, of the “batwing” type, fitted with drop handles. The doors are hung on visible external blackened wrought-iron hinges in a butterfly or double-H pattern.

Very good structural condition. Stable joinery, with no looseness. Superb dark waxed patina from use. Marks, traces of age, old functional restorations, and normal wear consistent with age. A dark halo-shaped stain is visible on the right side of the top. One brass drop handle is missing from the upper left drawer. Locks are in place, but keys are missing.
