Pair of Wooden Statuettes, Holy Figures, 18th Century, Sacred Art, Virgin, Apostle, Baroque
Pair of carved softwood sculptures, showing traces of ancient polychromy on the female figure. The bearded man is likely Saint Peter, Saint Paul, or Saint Joseph. The woman is likely the Virgin Mary or Mary Magdalene. These are undoubtedly fragments from a Calvary or a Nativity scene.
Depicting two full-length holy figures, clad in belted tunics and mantles with dynamic drapery in the Baroque style. The man—bearded, his face framed by wavy hair—stands on a stepped architectural base. The woman, depicted in a dynamic pose with her right arm raised, stands on a molded quadrangular plinth.
Condition Report: As is. Visible damage and losses, particularly to the arms of the male figure and to the hands. Presence of mounting holes at the top of the skulls (halos/glories are missing). The hands of the female figure are pierced (attributes missing).
