Original period etching, Louis XVI era (late 18th century, circa 1770–1786). Plate 931, Le Jougris.
From the monumental edition of Histoire Naturelle des Oiseaux (Natural History of Birds) by Georges-Louis Leclerc, Comte de Buffon (1707–1788). Scientific and naturalist depiction of various bird species.
Plate drawn and engraved by François-Nicolas Martinet (1726–1804), produced under the direction of Edme-Louis Daubenton for the “Planches Enluminées” (Hand-Colored Plates).
An impression on period watermarked laid paper. The engraving is hand-colored with watercolor and framed with the typical yellow wash bordered by black rules specific to this deluxe edition. Very fine execution in the rendering of the plumage.
Good condition. Colors well preserved, with a pleasing freshness. Usual scattered foxing and slight traces of paper oxidation due to age.
Signed lower left “Martinet”.
Presented under glass, with a moulded frame (gold leaf gilding over red bole).
