Late 18th century, circa 1785–1795
Dimensions with frame: 68.5 × 63.5 cm
Beautiful engraving depicting The Stolen Kiss, the famous gallant scene painted by Jean-Honoré Fragonard, one of the great masters of 18th-century French painting. The composition, full of grace and lightness, perfectly illustrates the refined spirit of Rococo painting at the end of the Ancien Régime.
The print was engraved by Nicolas-François Regnault after Fragonard’s original painting. It bears the address of the Parisian publisher “À Paris chez Regnault, rue de Montmorency”, indicating its distribution through the print-dealer network of the French capital in the late 18th century.
Printed from a copper plate, the impression shows a well-defined plate mark and finely executed hatching, faithfully rendering the modelling and atmosphere of the composition.
The engraving is beautifully presented in a gilt frame, with a high-quality wash mount that enhances the delicacy of the print.
Condition: very good overall condition.
Some typical foxing visible in the margins, consistent with the age of the paper.
