Large 19th Century Venetian Mirror with Swans
Artisanal work by a mirror-maker and cabinetmaker from the late 19th century
Rectangular glass with rich carved decoration and ornamentation of bevelled mirrors. The openwork carved wooden and stucco pediment is adorned with two confronted winged swans framing a central cartouche with an abundant baroque decor. The wings and highlights show traces of old gilding, bringing beautiful contrasts of material and light. The frame features carved acanthus leaves at the four corners, underlined by an elegant frieze of pearls running all around the surround.
Four small rectangular bevelled mirrors punctuate the composition, each adorned with floral and foliage motifs hand-engraved in the glass, typical of Venetian craftsmanship from the late 19th century. The large central mirror, also bevelled, retains its original chemically silvered glass (not mercury), showing some discreet pitting and black traces of oxidation, which add to the charm and authenticity of the ensemble. Formerly gilded with gold leaf then repatinated in white and grey. Control stamp on the back P. B. 1896. Presence of pencil annotations visible on the reverse of the frame, suggesting a passage through an auction in its history.
Venetian Style: Profusion of decorations engraved in the glass (flowers, foliage, arabesques), bevelled glass frames, applied ornaments. Venetian mirrors were prestigious objects from the 17th century onwards, reserved for aristocrats and wealthy merchants. They served as both functional and decorative objects, intended to reflect the light of chandeliers in salons. Probably designed to adorn a grand bourgeois or aristocratic interior in the 19th century.
Provenance: French private collection.
Rare for this type of piece, the ensemble is in remarkable condition: no breakages or structural accidents, no significant shocks or scratches.
