A charming still life depicting a bouquet of red roses arranged in a cream ceramic vase adorned with green decoration. The vase rests on a wooden table, with a few fallen petals in the foreground lending a poetic touch of realism. The background features discreet geometric motifs in pastel tones. Softly diffused light and masterful rendering of textures create a beautiful contrast between the background, the vase, and the flowers.

The watercolour is in very good condition and presented in a finely carved wooden frame with floral motifs, glazed and richly patinated, likely original. The frame bears minor signs of age that enhance the antique character of the ensemble. Some photographs were taken through a magnifying glass.

About the artist:
Born in Chambéry in 1868, Ernest Filliard trained under the painter Benoît Molin and developed a close friendship with fellow Savoyard painter François Cachoud. Filliard specialised in watercolours, with a particular fondness for Alpine landscapes and floral still lifes. His talent was recognised early in his career, with exhibitions in Chambéry, Lyon, and Paris. From 1892, he exhibited regularly at the Parisian salons, including the Salon du Champ-de-Mars and the Salon des Champs-Élysées. A member of the Société des Aquarellistes Français from 1906, Filliard received several distinctions at the Salon des Artistes Français and was made a Chevalier of the Légion d’Honneur in 1914. He died in Paris in 1933.
