Important Reliquary Frame With Radiant Glory – Italy, 18th Century
Important Reliquary Frame with Radiant Glory – Italy, 18th Century.
Oval reliquary frame in carved wood, decorated with a radiant glory in high relief.
The carving features alternating triangular rays, with original polychromy in shades of pinkish-red and golden ochre, now patinated and partially worn, revealing its considerable age.
Description:
The center is occupied by a glazed oval cavity housing a rich paper filigree work in gilt and silvered metal wire, embellished with cannetille, flowers, and stylized plant elements.
The composition is organized around a main relic identified by a handwritten label: “S. Clemens.”
The central relic, of a mineral nature (probably a fragment of stone associated with the saint), is fixed by gilt threads to a green textile background.
Around it are several relics arranged within the composition, each accompanied by its partially legible handwritten titulus.
Four small peripheral oval niches, also glazed, each contain four relics with handwritten labels.
The whole is closed on the back by an old mount. A red wax seal bearing a coat of arms, still in place, guarantees the integrity of the reliquary (unopened).
The seal features an ecclesiastical crest beneath a prelatic's hat. Italian work from the 18th century, typical of convent workshops, is evident in the fine paper filigree and dense composition on a textile background.
Dimensions: 29 x 35 cm.
Condition:
Sound structure. Wear and minor losses to the polychromy of the frame. Antique glass with slight alterations. Interior intact, not disassembled. Seal present.
A decorative and devotional piece, characteristic of late Baroque Italian productions intended for private oratories.
In accordance with canon law (can. 1190 §1), this sale concerns only the reliquary as a sacred work of art.
The relics it contains are not the object of the transaction but are included free of charge for their historical and cultural value.
