Reliquary Of The True Cross - Fragment Enclosed In A Crystal Cross - 19th Century
Reliquary of the True Cross - fragment included in a crystal cross - 19th century
Description:
A devotional reliquary featuring a fragment of the True Cross arranged in the center of a beveled crystal cross, mounted in a finely openwork metal frame.
The woody fragment, fixed in a cross, typically corresponds to a relic ex ligno Sanctae Crucis. It is held in place by antique bandages, according to 19th-century conventual custom.
The set is presented under glass, on an embossed red textile background, in a richly ornate gilded metal frame with rocaille and foliate decoration. Decorative work typical of 19th-century devotional production, probably from Western Europe (France or Belgium).
The reverse is closed by an antique mounting. Visible absence of ecclesiastical stamp
Condition:
Good overall condition. Used wear to gilding, slight alterations to reverse. Interior intact, with no visible displacement of the relic.
In accordance with canon law (can. 1190 §1), this sale concerns only the reliquary as an object of sacred art. The relics it contains are not the subject of the transaction, but are included free of charge for their historical and cultural value.
