Object description :

"Stained Glass Cartoon, 19th Century, Church Of St. John The Evangelist, Skellingthorpe"
A magnificent watercolor and graphite sketch on paper, intended for St. John the Evangelist Church in Skellingthorpe, Lincolnshire (UK). Created by James Powell & Sons of Whitefriars Glassworks, between approximately 1870 and 1880. From the 1880s onwards, Powell & Sons held a prominent position in the Morris & Co. showroom and collaborated closely with William Morris on his glass designs. This rare and valuable example of a preparatory sketch is a collector's item, as such sketches were often destroyed once the stained glass window was completed.
