Anatolian Kilia “star Gazer” Stone Idol Head On Stand
Magnificent marble head from an Anatolian Kilia idol, often referred to as the "Star Gazer" idol because of its characteristic stance, looking skyward. This ancient example of idolatry and sculpture from the Bronze Age or late Chalcolithic is of great finesse and retains subtle details. The use of these idols is often debated: were they primitive fertility statuettes, ritual objects, or some other function? This remains uncertain, as little is known about ancient Anatolian culture. This piece thus offers a fascinating and mysterious insight into early human cults and rituals, and bears witness to the influence of primitive idolatrous sculpture on contemporary art. Presented on a modern acrylic base.
