Carved Wooden Element In High Relief – Figure Of An Angel In A Dalmatic – Spanish Colonial Work
Hispanic Colonial Art (Viceroyalty of Peru or New Spain) – High-relief carved woodwork element – Figure of an angel in a dalmatic – Late 17th or very early 18th-century craftsmanship.
A wooden fragment (likely Spanish cedar, *Cedrela odorata*), carved in high-relief, depicting an angel wearing a finely crafted dalmatic. The tunic features a central foliate motif incorporating a flower with fully unfurled petals. The garment is framed by two thick, long, twisted cords that descend from the shoulders to the waist, terminating in decorative tassels. The short, wide sleeves are adorned with embroidered trim. This fragment originated from a large-scale religious architectural ensemble, an altarpiece, or perhaps a piece of furniture.
The facial features—stylized and expressive—reflect the intersection of Spanish Baroque models and their interpretation by colonial workshops. It is this fusion—the rigor of Spanish Baroque religious iconography combined with the distinct stylization characteristic of Latin American colonial sculpture—that lends the piece such profound depth. The figure emerges from a lush, vegetal background composed of scrolling foliage and palm fronds.
The piece possesses a remarkable, deep, dark, period-appropriate patina, reminiscent of chocolate. Any damage or losses are entirely consistent with the age of the object. There is no structural fragility or deterioration. A hanging hook is attached to the reverse.
